SV Homburg sign former Dortmund youth and Werder Bremen II coach Alexander Schmidt as new manager

Schmidt replaces Timo Wenzel, who was sacked in January

Schmidt will take charge of his first game against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen on Saturday

SV Homburg have appointed Alexander Schmidt as their new manager on a contract until 2024, the club have announced.

The 53-year-old replaces Timo Wenzel, who was sacked in January with the club 15th in the Regionalliga Südwest, one point above the relegation zone.

Schmidt, who played as a midfielder for Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen in the 1990s, has been out of work since leaving Werder Bremen II in 2021.

He has previously managed Borussia Dortmund II, MSV Duisburg, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Beijing Guoan in China.

"We are very pleased to have been able to sign Alexander Schmidt as our new manager," said Homburg sporting director Michael Koch.

"He is a very experienced coach who knows the Regionalliga well and has a proven track record of success."

Schmidt will take charge of his first game against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen on Saturday.

Homburg are currently 14th in the Regionalliga Südwest, four points above the relegation zone.

Schmidt's appointment is a sign of the club's ambition to avoid relegation and challenge for promotion in the future.

The 53-year-old is a highly respected coach with a wealth of experience, and he will be looking to use his expertise to help Homburg achieve their goals.
