Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson, the songwriting duo behind the Swedish pop band Roxette, have been hailed as "Europe's Lennon and McCartney" as they were inducted into the Swedish Music Hall of Fame.

The pair, who have sold more than 80 million records worldwide, were honoured at a ceremony in Stockholm on Tuesday (January 31) for their outstanding contribution to music.

Gessle, 64, and Fredriksson, 63, were presented with the award by Marie Dimberg, the CEO of the Swedish Music Hall of Fame, who said: "Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson are two of the most successful and influential songwriters in Swedish history.

They have written some of the most iconic songs of all time, including 'The Look', 'It Must Have Been Love' and 'Listen to Your Heart'.

Their songs have been covered by artists all over the world, and they have inspired a generation of musicians. We are honoured to induct them into the Swedish Music Hall of Fame.

Gessle and Fredriksson were joined at the ceremony by their Roxette bandmates, Per "Pelle" Alsing and Clarence Öfwerman.

In a speech, Gessle paid tribute to Fredriksson, who died of cancer in 2019. He said: "Marie was my best friend. She was my soulmate.

She was the one who believed in me when no one else did. She was the one who always pushed me to be better. I miss her every day.

Fredriksson was unable to attend the ceremony, but she sent a video message in which she said: "I am so proud of what we have achieved together.

We have shared so many amazing moments together. Thank you for being my friend, my partner and my muse.

The induction of Gessle and Fredriksson into the Swedish Music Hall of Fame is a fitting tribute to their extraordinary career.
